Summary 2 : Nov 16

An old university called Reginald Musgrave came to ask advice from Holmes. He wished for help in resolving that cannot explain series of events at his manor house, Hurlstone. Musgrave explained to Holmes that he kept a large staff of servants. The butler, Brunton, was a special man. He spoke some languages and played almost every music instrument.

Brunton was a lady’s man and he just broke up with his fiancée. After that he had take up with Janet, the gamekeeper’s daughter. Musgrave tells Holmes that one week before he has catch Brunton looking at Musgrave family documents. Reginald Musgrave was angry and gives Brunton notice but the butler begged to keep the public shame. Musgrave agree and told Brunton to leave in a week and to the reason for going. Brunton wanted to stay but Musgrave has to go to his company.

A couple of days later Musgrave was informed by a crazy Rachel that Brunton had disappeared. Brunton had gone to bed the night before. His clothes, watch and money were still in his room but his day to day suit which he usually wore was missing. The house was searched  any sign of Brunton but to no avail.

A few days later Rachel Howells, who was affected by the disappearance of Brunton went missing also. Her footprints were observed at the edge up on the grounds. The edge of the ground was dragged but instead of the expected bag was found which contained some rusted metal.

The paper which Brunton had been realized there was something of value in the cellar. The flagstone covering the cellar was too heavy for one person to have moved it. Since trust was an issue Brunton would have appealed to Rachel Howells to help him since he thought that she still loved him. Rachel hated Brunton, because he betrayed and revenged to him.
